New News on the paint job
August 24, 2002 - Got it all painted. All the parts and the body are now done. Now comes the part where I put it all back together again!
August 18, 2002 - done with the silver color coat/clear for the ground effects. Hopefully the rest of the car will come out as good as that did. We shall see in the next couple of days!
August 11, 2002 - done priming. Now I have to wet sand all day tomorrow and then she'll be ready to paint! It's not shown here, but before I hung the doors and fenders, I painted the edges and the jambs with the final color, so that's already taken care of.
July 07, 2002 - finished masking off the entire car (engine bay, glass and where the doors/t-tops would be if they were on there. Boy was that a job. It took me all day just to get the masking done.

After...

Well there she is. Looks good and all, but I gotta wet sand it and buff out a few runs :-/ Oops. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how it came out though. The GFX are all painted(silver) but not on the car yet as I have lots of sanding to do yet.

It's been a good month since I started working on the paint job, and 27 of the 28 days were spent on priming and sanding, and priming and ... Well you get the idea.

The "finishing" touches (old news from before I painted...)
Well, I've never painted a car before. Nope. This will be the first one, and hopefully it will all go well. Don't get me wrong though. I've rattle-canned a lot of different odds 'n' ends, and airbrushed serveral ABS canopies for my model airplanes and heli's, just nothing this big and this fussy. :-)

Part of the reason that I took the car all apart was to paint it the "right way". I figure I need all the help I can get, and cutting corners here wasn't going to help me out. As it turns out, this project car has been just a series of firsts for me.

The colors
I decided to keep it the stock color:

  • Flame Red Metallic body
  • Silver Metallic ground effects
Initial pricing puts me at about $350-$400 just for the paint, primer, clear coat, reducers and all the other mixins that you need to paint.

Timeframe
Hopefully I can have all of the supplies to do the job by 8/2002 and get it all done and painted in a weekend. Assuming I get a small number of runs, she'll be on the road soon after.

Addendum: Well it's taken me a week thus far (I'm pretty fussy) just getting it ready to prime. I suspect that I will be another week putting on the final coat and making everything look nice again.
